On July 10, 2009 a training on medical abortion for doctors of maternity hospitals and medical centers was organized in the framework of the project “Feasibility and Acceptability of Expanding Abortion Services in Armenia” in Congress Hotel.
The training was organized jointly with Gynuity Health Projects and Women’s Rights Center. Thirty physicians from different medical institutions and maternity hospitals from Yerevan and nearby regions participated in the training.
A package of relevant materials on medical abortion, including the list of studies, carried out by the Gynuity Health Projects, information booklet about the company, research and program summaries, a booklet “Tutorial on Medical abortion”, etc were disseminated among the participants.
The trainers - Dr. Tamar Tsereteli, Ph.D., Senior Consulting Associate (Gynuity Health Projects - Georgia) and Dr. George Tsertsvadze welcomed the participants and presented the goal and the agenda of the training. Dr. Tamar Tsereteli briefly introduced the goals and programs of Gynuity Health Projects as well as methods of application of the medicaments: mifepristone and misoprostol. During the training the participants presented their worries and concerns on the medicaments’ consuming issue in the drug stores or elsewhere.
Further on, Dr. George Tsertsvadze presented normal and abnormal diagnosis of early pregnancy – its clinical, biological and ultra-sound methods diagnosis. He also introduced the side effects and complications of the methods of medical abortion, consultations on contraceptives, post-abortion contraceptives, and further care after the medical abortion.
The training became more interactive and participants started active discussion during the case studies and aftermath talks. The participants were reading the questions and giving their solutions, discussing each case step-by-step. A training assessment test was also given to all participants to evaluate the training on medical abortion.
At the end of the training, the participants received certificates of participation and thanked trainers and organizers for an interesting and useful training. Dr. Tsereteli expressed her confidence that the training will assist participants to acquire better knowledge on methods and mechanisms of medical abortion, which will bring valuable input for the reproductive health situation in Armenia.
