White Ribbon Campaign in Yerevan (06.12.2009)

On December 6, 2009 Women’s Rights Center has organized a “White Ribbon” Campaign to commemorate the memory of 14 women who have been massacred by an anti-fascist man at l'École Polytechnique in Montreal on December 6, 1989.

White Ribbon Campaign was created by a handful of Canadian men in 1991 on the second anniversary of the massacre in Montreal. They began the White Ribbon Campaign to urge men to speak out against violence against women.

In Canada, the campaign is run from November 25 (the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) until December 6, Canada's National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

Today, hundreds of thousands of white ribbons are worn by men and women across Australia - men at work; men and women in all Australian police forces; men in national and local sporting matches and organizations; men in the media; men and women in politics; men in the defense forces; men and women in capital cities and in rural and regional Australia.

In the framework of “16 Days of Activism” Campaign in 2009 Women’s Rights Center has also launched similar Campaign from November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of All Forms of Violence Against Women up to December 6, Montreal Massacre Day.

White Ribbons with brief explanation notes were distributed among men who participated in the events organized by Women’s Rights Center from November 25, 2009.

A Street Action has been also organized on the Commemoration Day of Montreal Massacre on December 6, 2009 by distributing the White Ribbons to passing by in the streets men and explaining the meaning of the Ribbons. Their reaction was rather interesting for us, people were taking the Ribbons with great interest and asking question on what the Ribbons are for, what to do and what they were symbolizing.

Though it was winter day, the sun was warming us with its rays and people in the streets with their sympathy and care towards the topic we raised by the White Ribbon Campaign.
